What are Dentures?

If you are missing multiple natural teeth, dentures may be worth considering as a replacement for them.

Dentures are fake teeth that can be removable or fixed.

There are several reasons people lose their teeth, including:

You may also be at an increased risk of tooth loss if:

  • You're male
  • You're older than 35
  • You smoke/use tobacco
  • You have rheumatoid arthritis
  • You have diabetes
  • You have high blood pressure
  • You don't take care of your teeth at home
  • You don't visit the dentist for exams and cleaning every 6 months

Types of Dentures for Missing Teeth Replacement

Dentures are available in fixed and removable forms. In order to determine which option is best for you, schedule your consultation with Dr. Moeti at Smoke Rise Dental today. We would love to discuss your options.

If you are only missing a few teeth, a partial denture is likely going to be your best option- but if you are missing all of your teeth, you may consider a complete denture or implant-supported denture.

Traditional Complete Dentures

Traditional complete dentures, also referred to as full dentures, are designed to replace all of your teeth and are removable. If a patient has no teeth left in their upper or lower jaw, full dentures will be recommended.

Complete dentures have two parts: the teeth and the base. Typically, the teeth are made of plastic or porcelain. The porcelain teeth are considered an "upgrade" and therefore are much more expensive than traditional complete dentures. The base is made of acrylic resin and mimics the appearance of gum tissues and bone structure. However, it does not restore functionality.

If you have traditional complete dentures, you should have them checked each year. In addition to your regular checkups and cleanings, you should replace your dentures every 5 to 7 years, to avoid an improper fit.

On average, a set of traditional complete dentures cost $1,300 to $3,000 per arch.

Removable Partial Dentures

If you are missing just a few teeth on your upper or lower jaw, meaning you still have some natural teeth, a removable partial denture may be an option.

Removable partials are made from acrylic and include a gum-colored base with false teeth attached. The base is attached to two or more clasps that hold it in place. The clasps are made of flexible pink plastic or metal.

This solution is typically used to restore missing back teeth- that is molars and premolars but may also be used to replace front teeth or a combination of the two.

On average, removable partial dentures cost $650 to $2,500 per arch.

Implant-Supported Bridge

An implant-supported bridge, also known as a fixed bridge, is similar to a partial denture- but is not removable. A fixed bridge consists of dental implants being inserted into the jawbone. Crowns that are designed to look like teeth are attached to the implants. The bridge will attach to the implants. This is a good solution for patients who have three or more missing teeth in a row.

On average, implant-supported dental bridges cost $2,500 to $6,000 per implant.

Temporary Dentures

Temporary/immediate dentures are placed in the mouth immediately following tooth extraction. The primary reason for this is to eliminate the time when a patient is without teeth.

Until the patient has recovered from surgery and gotten adapted to the dentures, these do not allow good chewing and speaking ability. Once the healing process is complete, the patient can eat for short periods of time.

This solution is ideal for patients with sensitive gums and teeth and can work for a few weeks before the permanent dentures are placed to create a smooth transition.

There are two types of temporary dentures: conventional and interim. The conventional dentures are more natural looking. Interim dentures are cheaply made and will only last for a few months.

On average, temporary dentures cost $1,500 to $3,200 per arch.

Implant-Supported Dentures

An implant-supported denture, also known as an overdenture, is a denture that is held in place on your gums with implants. For most patients, there will be at least four implants, but this may not necessarily be the case with you. This tooth replacement solution can be used on the upper or lower jaw, or both (if needed).

The great thing about this option is that they are natural-looking, stable, and removable and are also much more comfortable and better for your oral health. Plus, with proper care and maintenance, they will last up to 10 years. On the other hand, the procedure is expensive and invasive. The recover time is much longer than with other options.

On average, implant-supported dentures cost $1,500 to $4,000 per arch.

Snap-In Dentures

Snap-in dentures, also referred to as snap-on dentures, are another name for removable implant-supported dentures. They are held in place by dental implants that have been inserted into your jawbone. For most patients, two to four implants are enough to hold the denture in place. However, some patients may require up to 10.

Once the implants have been inserted into the jawbone and the bone has fused around them, the implant-supported denture can be snapped on. You can remove the denture, but not the implants.

On average, snap-in dentures cost $1,500 to $4,000 per arch.

All-on-4 Implant Dentures

If you need a complete set of dentures, the All-on-4 implant dentures may be your best choice. They are designed to replace all of your teeth in your upper and lower jaw with four dental implants. The dentures can only be removed by your dentist.

This option is much more durable and will stay in place better than other options. Plus, they are more natural looking because they don't require the fullness/bulkiness that traditional dentures and implant-supported dentures are known for.

Depending on your situation, Dr. Moeti and the team at Smoke Rise Dental will be able to place the implants and load a temporary bridge on the same day. You will have dietary restrictions for three months until the permanent bridge is placed.

On average, All-on-4 implants cost $50,000 to $60,000 for both upper and lower.

While this does seem expensive, it's much cheaper than having individual implants placed for each missing tooth.

Custom Dentures

While it's true that all dentures are "customized" for each patient. If you wish, you can take it a step further and have them made with more expensive materials, such as porcelain teeth. Acrylic is the cheapest material that is used, and cast metal or titanium are the most expensive.

On average, custom dentures cost up to $15,000 per arch, depending on the materials you choose.

Affordable Dentures

Finally, we have economy dentures, which are pre-made, generic, and cheap compared to the other options. They are not made to fit your mouth and do not look natural. You will need a denture adhesive to keep them in place.

We do not recommend these as a permanent solution because they can harm your mouth and cause poor oral hygiene. However, we understand that sometimes this may be all you can afford. We would recommend that you get these if it's all your budget allows- but work on saving up for a more permanent, comfortable solution in the future.

On average, affordable dentures cost $300 to $600 per arch.
