What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection and inflammation of the gums and tissues that support your teeth. It usually develops when plaque builds up along the gumline.

Stages of Gum Disease

Gingivitis: The earliest stage, which may cause red, swollen, or bleeding gums. It can often be reversed with professional cleaning and good oral hygiene.

Periodontitis: A more advanced stage that can damage the gums and supporting bone. Professional treatment can help control the disease and reduce further progression.

Signs You May Need Periodontal Care

Gum disease does not always cause severe pain. Some people experience only mild symptoms even when periodontal changes are developing.

Consider scheduling a periodontal evaluation if you notice:

Gums that bleed while brushing or flossing

Red, swollen, or tender gums

Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste

Gums pulling away from the teeth

Teeth that appear longer than before

Sensitivity around exposed tooth roots

New spaces developing between teeth

Loose or shifting teeth

Discomfort while chewing

Changes in the way your teeth come together

Risk may be higher with smoking, diabetes, certain medications, family history, or poor oral hygiene. A dental exam can identify the cause and determine the right level of periodontal care.

How Gum Disease Treatment Works at Smoke Rise Dental

Smoke Rise Dental plans gum disease treatment based on the severity of the condition, the depth of periodontal pockets, and how the gums respond to initial care.

Treatment begins with an examination of your gums and teeth. Dr. Moeti may measure periodontal pocket depths, check for bleeding, recession, tooth mobility, and tartar buildup, and review dental X-rays when needed. These findings help determine the extent of gum disease and the most appropriate treatment approach.

For periodontitis, treatment often begins with scaling and root planing, also known as a deep cleaning. Scaling removes plaque and hardened tartar from above and below the gumline, while root planing cleans and smooths the affected root surfaces.

Depending on how many areas require treatment, the procedure may be completed over one or more appointments. Local anesthetic may be used to improve comfort.

Smoke Rise Dental may use BIOLASE WaterLase™ technology in selected periodontal cases. Dr. Moeti may incorporate laser-assisted care when it is appropriate for your gum condition.

WaterLase does not replace established periodontal treatment such as scaling and root planing, and it is not required for every patient.

After initial treatment, your gums are re-evaluated to check healing, inflammation, and periodontal pocket depths. If deeper areas remain difficult to manage, we may recommend additional treatment.

For more advanced cases, Smoke Rise Dental may recommend osseous surgery to provide better access beneath the gumline and address affected areas around the supporting bone.

Once active treatment is complete, ongoing periodontal maintenance helps manage bacterial buildup and monitor treated areas. Smoke Rise Dental generally schedules periodontal maintenance every three to four months, although your recommended schedule may vary based on your periodontal health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Many patients begin with non-surgical treatment such as scaling and root planing. Surgery may be considered when deeper periodontal areas remain or the condition does not respond adequately to initial treatment.

Local anesthetic may be used during scaling and root planing for comfort. Mild soreness, gum tenderness, or tooth sensitivity can occur afterward and usually improves as the tissues heal.

Gingivitis can be reversed, but gum attachment and bone lost because of periodontitis do not automatically grow back after treatment. Periodontal care focuses on controlling the disease and limiting further damage.

Treatment time depends on the severity of gum disease and the number of areas involved. Scaling and root planing may require one or more visits, followed by a re-evaluation and ongoing periodontal maintenance when needed.

Many PPO dental plans provide benefits for periodontal services, but coverage, deductibles, frequency limits, and annual maximums vary. Smoke Rise Dental accepts most PPO plans and can help review your estimated benefits before treatment.
